Terms & conditions.
The terms below cover how you use Prism and what you can expect from it. We have tried to write them like a person would speak them.
By downloading, installing, or using Prism (the "app"), you agree to the terms on this page. If you do not agree, do not use the app — and please uninstall any copies you already have.
These terms are written in plain English. Where a legal phrase is unavoidable, we explain what it means in practice.
Use of the app
The desktop app — macOS, Windows, and Linux — is free to download and use, for personal or commercial purposes, with no account required. The mobile apps for iOS and Android are a single one-time purchase of 4.99 € through their app stores: no subscription, and no trial that turns into a charge. There is no limit on the number of entries you can store on any platform.
You may install Prism on the devices you own, within the normal limits of the app store you bought the mobile app from. You may also keep multiple vault files for different purposes — work, personal, shared with family.
Buying the mobile app
The iOS and Android apps are sold to you by the app store you buy from — Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). The store is the seller of record: it concludes the sale, takes the payment, issues the receipt, and collects any applicable tax. We are the app's publisher, not a party to that purchase, and we never receive your card details or billing information.
Because the sale happens inside the store, refunds and any right to cancel are handled by that store under its own policy. Request a refund through Apple or Google — and if you believe you are entitled to one and the store declines, contact us and we will help where we can.
Where the law of your country gives you a statutory right to withdraw from the purchase or to a refund, that right applies in addition to the store's policy and is not affected by anything in these terms. It is a one-time purchase: once you own the app, there is nothing further to pay and no recurring charge.
The license you receive
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Prism on your devices. The app itself, its source code, design, and brand remain our property. You may not:
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code, except where local law gives you a right we cannot waive.
- Re-brand, repackage, or redistribute Prism as your own product.
- Use the Prism name, logo, or trade dress in a way that suggests we endorse you or your project without our written agreement.
If Prism becomes open source in the future, the open-source license will govern those uses and supersede this section for the portions it covers.
Your master password is your responsibility
Prism is designed so that we cannot read, recover, or reset your vault. That is the entire point. The practical consequence is that you, and only you, are responsible for remembering your master password and keeping it safe.
If you forget your master password, your vault is lost. We cannot bring it back. Please choose a master password you can remember, and consider writing it down somewhere physically safe — a sealed envelope in a drawer, a piece of paper in a fireproof box — as a last-resort backup.
We also cannot retrieve data from a corrupted vault file, a broken device, or a Drive folder you have emptied. If sync is important to you, keep at least two devices connected so a copy survives the loss of any one of them.
Sync and third-party services
If you enable Google Drive sync, you are also bound by Google's terms of service for the part of your Drive that holds your vault. Prism does not control Google's policies, uptime, or pricing — please review them at the Google account level.
If you enable breach checking, your requests go to Have I Been Pwned (haveibeenpwned.com). Their privacy policy applies to that service. Prism uses their k-anonymity API, which means we send only the first 5 characters of an irreversible hash — never your password.
Site icons may be fetched from individual websites or Google's public favicon service, depending on availability. We do not pass any account or vault information to those endpoints — only the bare URL you are trying to identify.
Disclaimer of warranties
Prism is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranty of any kind, express or implied. We make no promise that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any defect will be corrected. We also make no promise that the app will fit any particular purpose you have in mind for it.
We do our best to ship a secure, reliable product, and we encourage you to keep regular backups of your vault file alongside any other important data on your devices.
None of this affects the rights you have as a consumer under the law of your own country. Where those rights — such as a legal guarantee that the app matches the description we gave it, or a statutory right to a remedy — cannot be waived by agreement, they continue to apply regardless of anything written here.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent allowed by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Prism — including, but not limited to, loss of data, loss of access to accounts, loss of business, or loss of goodwill.
Where local law does not allow such limitations to be excluded entirely, our total liability to you for any claim relating to Prism is limited to the amount you paid for the app — nothing for the free desktop app, and at most the one-time price for the mobile apps.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the app changes in a way that affects them. When we do, we will update the effective date and version at the top of the page. Material changes will be highlighted in the release notes for the version that introduces them.
If you continue using Prism after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms. If you don't, you are free to uninstall the app and keep your vault file — it is yours, and you can decrypt it with any compatible build of Prism in the future.
